What is The Mary M. Gooley Hemophilia Center, Inc., Scholarship Fund?
The Mary M. Gooley Hemophilia Center, Inc. began funding a scholarship fund in 1996 to assist individuals within the bleeding disorder community to pursue studies beyond high school. Educational experience can go a long way toward improving the quality of one’s life. We view our scholarship program as one more way for us to achieve our mission “to provide means to improve the lives of people affected by bleeding disorders and iron overload.”
What is the Bob Hersh Memorial Scholarship?
This scholarship has been named to honor the memory of a long-time patient, board member and friend of the center- Bob Hersh. Individuals planning to enter a helping or teaching profession may apply for this scholarship.
How much are the scholarship awards?
The Mary Gooley Hemophilia Center Scholarship: This award may vary in the amount. The maximum scholarship award is $2,000 every year. Scholarship awards may be spent on direct expenses associated with attending an accredited institution. Travel costs will not be supported. Scholarships are awarded for one year at a time. Recipients must re-apply to be considered for additional support on a year-by-year basis.
The Bob Hersh Memorial Scholarship: A $1000 educational scholarship will be awarded annually to a recipient entering a helping or teaching profession.
Who is eligible to apply?
To be eligible, candidates must be:
- High school upperclassmen or graduates or students in good standing who are already enrolled in a post-secondary program, and
- planning to enroll in a course of study at an accredited 2- or 4-year college, university, or vocational technical school program or certified training program, with priority given to undergraduate study,
And
- A person affected directly or indirectly by Hemophilia, von Willebrand Disease, hereditary bleeding disorder or Hemochromatosis
- Reside in or going to school in one these 48 upstate NY counties: Albany, Allegany, Broome, Cattaraugus, Cayuga, Chautauqua, Chemung, Chenango, Clinton, Columbia, Cortland, Delaware, Erie, Essex, Franklin, Fulton, Genesee, Greene, Hamilton, Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Livingston, Madison, Monroe, Montgomery, Niagara, Oneida, Onondaga, Ontario, Orleans, Oswego, Otsego, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, Schuyler, Seneca, St. Lawrence, Steuben, Tioga, Tompkins, Warren, Washington, Wayne, Wyoming, and Yates.
How to apply:
Those interested in applying must complete the application and forward it, along with all attachments, to the Mary Gooley Hemophilia Center no later than March 30, 2013. Applicants are responsible for gathering and submitting all of the required materials. Applicants will be evaluated only on the information supplied, therefore it is important to answer all questions completely. All information will be held confidential.
How recipients are selected for the scholarship?
The recipients will be chosen on the basis of academic performance, financial need, the written essay, personal or family circumstances, participation in school and community activities, work or volunteer experience and recommendations. Selection will be based on evaluation of the required documentation.
While this scholarship is funded by the Hemophilia Center, the selection of the award recipients is made by a the board of the Hemophilia Foundation of Upstate New York (HFUNY), an independent 501(c)3 organization.
When and how will the awards be given out?
Recipients will be notified by mail. The scholarship winners will be announced at the Hemophilia Center’s annual meeting in June. The award will be a check made payable jointly to the student and to the institution. Award recipients are responsible for notifying the Center of any changes of address, school enrollment, or other relevant information.
